Lake Elmenteita
lake_elmenteita The lake is an 18 km² soda lake, in the eastern part of the Great Rift Valley. The lake attracts visiting flamingo, and its shores are grazed by zebra, gazelle, eland and families of warthog.

Major Attractions

The town of Gilgil is located near Lake Elmenteita. Of the Rift Valley lakes, Elmenteita is located between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. The major Nairobi - Nakuru highway runs along a nearby escarpment offering wide scenery towards the lake.

Lake Elmenteita has been a Ramsar site since 2005.The Lake is surrounded by spectacular country that played an important role in the early colonial history of Kenya.

Getting There

Main road access to Elmenteita is directly from Nairobi by bus/Matatu or private transport. The main highway continues to Nakuru. The nearest town is GilGil. Elmenteita is a one and a half hour drive from Nairobi. There is an airstrip in Naivasha, with charter flights available. Lodges and camps here can organize transfers from Nairobi to Naivasha.

Getting Around

This is a good area to explore on foot. Lodges and Camps here can organize local excursions.
